Why do we need Mi'gmaw Education Standards?
Shed light on difficult history (assimilation and genocide). And it will help us co-build standards to uphold Mi'gmaq values, principles, and aspirations.
Note that these are Living Standards and are continuously growing and evolving.
1) EDUCATOR-LEARNER RELATIONSHIP
Create authentic educator-learner relationships as part of lifelong learning.
2) STRENGTH-BASED
Take a strength-based approach that recognizes, encourages, and honours learners' unique gifts.
3) MI'GMAWEI TLI'SUTI
Angwiasultinej, apaqonmatultinej, aqq megit'tmnej aqq siawigweg Mi'gmewei tli'suti. Nourish, support, and value the use and growth of the Mi'gmaq language.
4) LAND-BASED
Learn on and with the land. Weave together 'outdoor' and 'indoor' learning. Experiential, hands-on, and holistic approaches to learning.
5) CENTER MI'GMAW WORLDVIEW
and carefully include Western theory, research and knowledges in the learning environments, teaching methods, content, resources, and education supports.
6) RELATIONS
Involve extended families (caregivers/Elders/knowledge holders) in the learning by creating positive and supportive school-home connections.
7) POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Create a positive environment for learning: safe, inclusive, supportive, collaborative, and caring.
8) LEGACY OF COLONIALISM
Name and address colonial history and trauma in an ethical manner without causing more harm.
9) LIFELONG LEARNING
Encourage and promote lifelong learning.
