The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Development Centre (LMDC) is pleased to announce that it has approved to maintain the increased participant allowance rates making it more affordable for Listuguj Mi’gmaq students to realize their adult schooling goals.
The following rates are available for eligible full-time Listuguj Mi’gmaq students attending local academic upgrading or vocational programs.
Clients receiving Employment Insurance benefits while attending full-time vocational courses will receive a top-up of $400 per month instead of the previous amount of $100.
Upgrading Supports
The LMDC also approved changes to incentives and travel supports for Adult Listuguj Mi’gmaq wanting to learn to speak Mi’gmaq; complete a Vocational Diploma; or achieve their Adult Education completion certification.
Effective September 1, 2024, full-time Listuguj Mi’gmaq students attending LMDC’s Adult Mi’gmaq Language Immersion programs (Years 1 and 2) or Elasimgewei Gina’muo’guom’s Adult Education classes, will be eligible for $350 participation incentive and $350 travel supports per month in addition to participant allowances or Employment Insurance benefits. Childcare is also available for eligible parents. Note: All supports are based on attendance.
For example:
A single person (with no dependents) is enrolled full-time in Adult Mi’gmaq Immersion or Adult Education. They will receive:
- An allowance payment on August 29, 2024, for $1,340 for September.
- After 3 weeks of schooling, payment for the incentive and travel supports for $700 (based on attendance) is deposited on September 26, 2024, plus the advance allowance payment for October of $1,340.
These new supports will provide clients in upgrading with approximately $510 per week of allowance.
